Equinix introduced VMware vCloud Air on Platform Equinix, available via the colo’s London and Frankfurt hubs, and remotely across Europe via carriers.

The company said the dedicated, private connections will reduce network costs and provide better network performance than Internet-based connections for enterprise customers looking to build VMware-based hybrid clouds, alongside other cloud services including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure.

Equinix confirmed the solution will be available via direct connect inside Equinix’s LD5 International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in London and FR2 data centre in Frankfurt, with the potential to scale across Equinix’s campus worldwide.

Mark Adams, chief development officer at Equinix, said: "There is strong demand for high performance enterprise-grade cloud services, and VMware is a welcome addition to our growing ecosystem of best-in-class cloud service providers."

Gavin Jackson, vice president and general manager at vCloud business unit, VMware, said: "Working with Equinix accelerates our access to customers and our customers’ access to cloud applications that can run seamlessly both on- and off-premises. Customers gain new data centre locations for VMware vCloud Air and complementary connection, network, collocation, hosting and managed services to facilitate their hybrid cloud build-out."

An Equinix survey revealed 91% of UK and 88% of German businesses are planning the deployment of new cloud-based offerings this year.
