The fact that Rochester, New Hampshire-based Cabletron Systems Inc’s revenue has finally overtaken Santa Clara-based SynOptics Communications Inc in the field of managed hubs is down to a growing preference among users for direct sales, according to a report in a recent issue of Computerworld magazine. However, the publication quotes Jerry McDowell, Dataquest’s principal network analyst as saying it’s doubtful that Cabletron will be able to continue supporting the overheads that this level of sales and support entails for the rest of the year. On top of that, Forrester Research Inc predicts an overall dip in 1992 hub revenue growth.
