Compaq Computer Corp’s happy Christmas – which saw it ending up top of the heap in terms of units of personal computers sold in 1994 according to International Data Corp – was clouded by the fact that it had to recall its flagship LTE Elite notebook computer from dealers in Europe, and has been sending engineers to customers to fix two potential problems. One of the glitches is the memory problem disclosed in November, which can be fixed by installing new software, but Compaq has also discovered that a small number of Elites were shipped in Europe with faulty capacitors that could fail running off 240V supplies, causing the power supply to fail. Units still with dealers will be repaired at Compaq’s plant in Erskine, Scotland, where a separate production line has been established to handle the recalled units.
