Ciena will support O2’s new high-speed nationwide backbone network throughout the UK, providing the commercial brand of Telefónica with converged packet optical solutions.

Connecting major UK cities, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Liverpool, the new backbone network will enable O2 to deliver web-scale services to support massive growth in data center and network virtualisation demands.

Powered by Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical platform, and equipped with WaveLogic 3 Coherent Optical Processors, the 100G network will be able to accomadate several terabits of traffic in O2’s backbone and, at the same time, respond dynamically to any demand changes.

O2 will deploy 6500 platforms equipped with packet switch modules, which will provide integration of packet and optical technologies to reduce total cost of operation and time-to-market for new services.

O2 will gain comprehensive service visualisation and network diagnostics through Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System, which will result in the efficient use of critical network assets and bandwidth optimisation.

Brendan O’Reilly, CTO at O2, said: "This network enhancement is a great example of O2’s commitment to our mission to provide our customers with a superior user experience.

"By selecting Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and unified management solutions we will ensure that we have a high-speed and scalable network that can meet our customers’ demands and provide the foundation needed for high bandwidth consuming services."
