The Interconnect Program plans to boost performance and reduce costs for Akamai customers using Google’s Cloud Platform.

The collaboration between the cloud platform and Akamai is designed to reduce hosting and egress costs.

Participation as a Google Cloud Platform CDN Interconnect Provider will help to ensure that the cloud platform serves all in region traffic that is destined for Akamai’s Intelligent Platform, via its regions.

The company says that customers should expect performance improvements and the ability to save up to 66% on Google Cloud Platform egress costs.

Bill Wheaton, EVP & GM, media products division, Akamai, said that the collaboration would: "Ensure that our joint customers can pass traffic directly from Google Cloud Platform to the Akamai CDN."

The collaboration comes as more enterprises move to rely upon cloud-based computing and storage resources to drive their business.
