The usage of employee owned smartphones and tablets used in the enterprise is expected to reach 350m by 2017, according a study by Juniper Research.
The rise in BYOD trend accounts almost 23% of the total installed base of consumer owned tablets and smartphones.
Rapid adoption of high end smartphones and tablets including iPhones, iPads and Android devices along with the number of accessible apps is driving the BYOD concept, the report revealed.
The BYOD trend is getting a boost, with more number of employees using their own mobile computing devices in their work places and accessing corporate assets.
The BYOD trend is also supported by cloud based services, accessible from almost anywhere.
According to the report, Threats, Solutions & Market Forecasts 2012-2017′, the BYOD trend despite of its various advantages; it also poses potential security risks.
The report revealed, majority of employee’s phones and smart devices did not have any form of security software loaded nor were company materials protected.
Report author Nitin Bhas said while BYOD has become an ‘inevitable’ trend for the enterprise, businesses need to create new end-user IT policies and address the key security issues emerging.
"New device management policies and security measures need to be put in place," Bhas said.
The report finds that the public sector will be late adopters of the BYOD in the market.
Region-wise, Western Europe will account for the highest number of consumer owned devices within the enterprise.
