Over a quarter of businesses are failing to take advantage of convergent technologies, new research has revealed.

This is because of problems related to security, vendor lock-ins, integration and compliance, a survey released by The Open Group has revealed.

The vendor- and technology-neutral consortium said the technologies included mobility, social networks, Big Data, cloud computing, and the Internet of things.

The study of 139 consultants, developers and end users, found that while 95% agreed such technologies provide an opportunity for businesses, about 25% said they were ill-equipped to take advantage of them.

The research suggested that problems related to software had stopped respondents from using convergent technologies.

Most notably, 57% said they had experienced problems with security, 51% on vendor lock-in, 45% on integration and 42% on regulatory compliance.

Dr. Chris Harding, forum director of Open Platform 3.0 at The Open Group, said industry analysts and practitioners have noted the convergence of four to six technologies which offer the potential to create new business models and system designs.

"However, they also pose architectural issues and structural considerations which will need to be overcome in order for businesses to benefit. Today’s findings confirm the value of an open platform to protect users of these technologies from vendor lock-in," he said.

"They also show that security is a key concern that must be addressed, that the platform must make the technologies easy to use, and that it must enable them to be used in combination. The Open Group established the Open Platform 3.0 Forum to address these concerns, and to help organizations cope with the dramatic changes in technology we are currently seeing."
