As the UK clocked its highest recorded temperatures for July the IT sector continued to dazzle us with yet more strange events. Here are the stories we could not believe:
1. Gartner says Cisco’s solid state array (SSA) lacks innovation
Cisco, traditionally a networking goliath, entered the SSA market through the purchase of Whiptail in 2013, but since then have disappointed some analysts, as this week showed.
As Gartner, perhaps the most important research firm in IT, put it: "Attrition in the Whiptail organisation and the lack of focus on SSAs from Cisco are negatively impacting implementation and technical support services."
2. Ofcom: Freephone will be free to all phones
Landlines have been increasingly irrelevant to Britons as we have taken up the smartphone in our millions, a fact not accounted for by past rules that charged mobiles when they contacted 0800 and 0808 numbers free to landlines.
As part of what Ofcom called "the biggest change to telephone calls in years" mobiles will now be able to call the above numbers free. Additionally phone companies must make it clear when a customer will be charged for a call, and which calls they have been charged for must be shown on the bill.
3. Donald Trump may have been hacked
The hotel named for manget, Mexico offender and famously buffont Donald Trump – appears to have been hacked, according to information passed to the security journalist Brian Krebs.
Commenting on the attack Ken Westin, an analyst at software firm Tripwire, told CBR: "When a larger group of organisations appears to be involved, it usually indicates that the breach took advantage of shared network resources or applications."
