The buyer for the assets of bankrupt Scientific Micro Systems Inc in Mountain View, California turns out to be ambitious Chips & Technoologies Inc, San Jose. The company is paying $9.5m for the assets in order to flesh out its embryonic Mass Storage Operations and build a second string to its core bow of designing building block chip sets for manufacturers of Intel iAPX-86-based personal computers. The pact for acquisition of the disk controller hardware and software is subject to bankruptcy court approval and Chips may assume some liabilities along with Scientific’s technologies, patents, and design expertise. The first product of the Chips & Tech Mass Storage Operation, formed in March, was an adaptor to attach disk drives to IBM’s Micro Channel.
