Desperate to conserve foreign exchange, China has banned imports of computer hardware and a variety of other consumer and professional electronic products to protect its domestic industry, according to the official China Daily: also banned is the import of assembly lines for products including televisions, picture tubes, resistors and microwave communication equipment; China produced 14m television sets in the first half of 1989, but a sales tax introduced early in the year has resulted in a reported surplus of some two million sets.
