Cambridge University gives a holographic heads up to Jaguar Land Rover

News: HUD tech projects key driving data onto the windscreen.

By CBR Staff Writer

Automaker Jaguar Land Rover has implemented a head-up display (HUD) using holographic technology, developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge.

The technology, which is currently available on all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, projects important driving data onto a small area of the windscreen.

It will allow drivers to see information regarding speed of the vehicle, direction and navigation in full color and in two dimensions without having to take their eyes off the road.

The university claims that its HUD is the first to use laser holographic techniques, that is designed to offer better color, brightness and contrast, when compared to other systems in a smaller, lighter package.

HUD is one of the various features that have been implemented into cars in recent years. Several companies across the world, most notably Google, are developing autonomous cars.

University of Cambridge Department of Engineering professor Daping Chu said: "We’re moving towards a fully immersive driver experience in cars, and we think holographic technology could be a big part of that, by providing important information, or even by encouraging good driver behaviour.

Chu said the technology’s potential has yet to be fully realised, and its real advantage is what it could be used for in future models.

He said: "What we really want to see is a fully 3D display which can provide much more information to the driver in a non-intrusive way – this is still a first generation piece of technology."
