In reflection of the increasing convergence of workstations, personal computers and terminals, Groupe Bull has merged its three small systems units to create Bull MTS. The three entities going into the new unit are the Micral personal computer and display terminals business that was originally structured around its R2E acquisition; Transac, acquired from CGE, which specialised in banking and remote batch terminals; and Sems, the company originally formed by the merger of the old CII Mitra and the Telemecanique Solar minicomputer businesses, which now majors on Bull’s family of Unix machines. The new subsidiary will have two arms – hardware and software development and manufacture, and applications and customisation. It will be headquartered in the Paris suburb of Massy, with plants in Grenoble and Villeneuve d’Ascq, and accounts for one third of group turnover. The other two companies that with MTS make up Groupe Bull are Bull Systemes and Bull Peripheriques.
