BEA’s WebLogic Platform is running on Solaris for both Xeon and Advanced Micro Devices Inc’s (AMD) 32-bit Opteron processor based systems.

Two years ago, BEA bought its own Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which it optimized with Intel Corp to improve WebLogic’s performance on Intel-based x86. BEA took the step to help grow its business by focusing on high-volume, low-cost systems and ending reliance on Sparc-based Solaris, which accounted for roughly 70% of business.

BEA is believed to have whittled down Solaris to around 40% of its business today.

Announcing availability at JavaOne in San Francisco, California, BEA said in a statement yesterday customers are demanding a choice of operating systems and low cost hardware when developing and deploying WebLogic.

Oracle Corp, meanwhile, is expected to also soon announce availability of its 10g Database on Sun’s x86 Solaris, sources told ComputerWire.
