AT&T Co’s Largo, Florida-based AT&T Paradyne says it has developed technology that may revolutionise part of the telecommunications industry by enabling copper cabling to carry data at speeds comparable with fibre optics: the company calls the hardware and software development carrierless, amplitude-phase modulation and says that it enables transmission over copper at up to 3Mbps, enough to enable individual telephone users to have video on demand and multi-media information presentations as well as standard telephone service; the company does not intend to keep the development to itself, and will license it and make it available to telecommunications firms worldwide.
