Apple Computer Inc has awarded a grant to a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin to develop a handheld computer as a delivery system for personalised electronic newspapers: the university did not disclose the size of the grant, which was awarded to Dr Wayne Danielson, a former dean of its College of Communication, who will head a 12-month research programme that includes developing hardware and software, training graduate students and staff, and gaining access to news databases; the idea is that users of Apple’s Newton would specify how much reading time they have and the proportion of news they want in different areas, and the computer would then prepare an edition giving the most space to the most important news on each of the subjects nominated.
