The Airbus Group has won a £1.4m deal with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to improve the country’s cyber defences.

Under the scheme Airbus will help the MoD analyse cyberattacks, distinguishing between isolated events and broader campaigns, as well as develop a Virtual Cyber Centre of Operations to aid businesses in the fight against cybercrime.

Ben Parish, cyber situational awareness capability adviser at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), said: "We are pleased to be able to continue delivering excellent research on behalf of MOD through our industry partners.

"Cyber technologies are constantly evolving and it’s crucial for the UK’s Armed Forces to keep abreast of these developments."

Airbus will be joined by MooD International and Xuvasi, who will respectively provide visual analytics and event correlation data to the scheme, which is set to last until March 2016.

The companies hope that research at the operations centre will contribute to the development of further centres to improve the military and corporate cybersecurity.

Kevin Jones, research team leader of cyber operations at Airbus Group Innovations, said "This contract award follows four years of work with DSTL, and the collaboration and cooperation of multiple stakeholders.

"As cyber-threats continue to develop both in complexity and technological advancement we are proud to be part of the MoD’s next step into modern cyber defence and understanding."
