A man has been arrested in connection with the recent VTech hacking incident as part of an investigation by the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).
The 21-year-old man was arrested in Bracknell on 15 December under sections 1 and 2 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990.
A number of electronic devices were seized to be examined by SEROCU’s Cyber Crime eForensics Unit.
The VTech hack took place on 14 November, with customers informed of the hack on 27 November.
While initial reports from VTech claimed 4.8 million accounts had been exposed in the hack, later figures suggested 6,368,509 children’s accounts affected.
VTech claimed that 16 countries were affected, despite listing Latin America as a single country. 727,155 UK accounts were hit by the hack.
Apparently no credit card information or personal identification data was included in the hacked data, but children’s profiles including names, gender and birthdays, as well as profile pictures and messages, were in the breached data.
"We are still at the early stages of the investigation and there is still much work to be done," Craig Jones, Head of the Cyber Crime Unit at SEROCU. "We will continue to work closely with our partners to identify those who commit offences and hold them to account.
"We are pursuing cyber criminals using the latest technology and working with businesses and academia to further develop specialist investigative capabilities to protect and reduce the risk to the public."
