Perception Codes’ desktop AR “Holo-SDK” takes school students to Mars

Perception Codes, the now UK-based company specialising in desktop Augmented Reality (AR), hosted an AR workshop, where it took 26 Bangkok Prep International School students on an immersive journey to the planet Mars.

The deep tech company’s workshop, focussing on educating students on basic coding skills, enriched them with a hands-on experience in developing their own Desktop AR using Perception’s proprietary Holographic Software Development Kit (Holo-SDK).

The three-hour workshop used Holo-Mars, Perception’s sample application, to help the students create holographic applications employing its Holo-SDK through a simulated game showing an astronaut exploring Mars with his satellite and rovers.

Holo-SDK uses AR technology to help users create their own volumetric displays, such as the illusion of 3D objects and scenes on any ordinary 2D monitor using just a computer, webcam, and anaglyph (3D) glasses.

Students equipped with just simple coding skills can expand their programming skillsets and portfolio with the help of Holo-SDK. Encouraged by this, Perception Codes intends to conduct many more such workshops and also expand to not just other Thai schools but worldwide too. The company’s ultimate aim is to create technological entrepreneurs and professionals for the future, while developing upon the necessary coding skills.

Perception Codes chief technology officer Krisada Chaiyasarn said: “We want to educate our young students to be technology entrepreneurs, be creators, not consumers.”

Bangkok Prep International School Head of Careers and Student Pathways Alison Cantrill said: “It is good to see students being challenged with activities outside of the classroom. I can see that Desktop AR applications can be integrated as teaching tools to increase the level of engagement and interactions with lessons.”

Desktop pioneer Dr Sirisilp, also called “Dr. Rabbit”, founded Perception Codes in 2019. He has been working on his research for the Desktop AR for nearly 7-8 years until the company secured its first seed funding two years back.

Green for go: Transforming trade in the UK

After being closely scrutinised as a cost-effective alternative to expensive AR, Perception Codes secured its 2nd round of funding late last year.

Originating in Thailand, the start-up has now shifted base to the UK. It is trying to put the very tools needed to create desktop AR applications into the hands of developers, making the technology easily accessible to everyone.

Supported by the UK government’s Department for International Trade’s (DIT’s) Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP), the company’s recent decision to explore the UK market will see it join hands with both Thai and UK schools and museums to enhance learning experience.

Ever since the Covid-19 pandemic, with people not able to go anywhere, Holo-SDK has become the tool that gives people access to economical 3D content in the safety of their homes.

Department for International Trade Commercial Counsellor Richard Porter exclaimed: “I’m excited to see more representations from Thailand under the Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP) this year. With the current travel limitations as a result of Covid-19, Desktop AR is certainly a technology of the future, removing barriers to learning and experiencing for learners around the globe. I very much look forward to Perception Codes bringing their technology to the UK and helping them to reach even more consumers on the global stage. If you are a deep tech entrepreneur in Thailand with a bright idea, do not hesitate to reach out to us at the Department for International Trade.”

Perception Codes is among three Thai companies that was selected for the UK’s Global Entrepreneur Programme (GEP). The programme encourages overseas tech entrepreneurs to use Britain as a launchpad to upgrade to global scale.

Perception Codes LTD Founder and CEO Sirisilp Kongsilp declared: “Desktop AR is the technology of the future, all future computer applications will be holographic!”.

Since its origin in 2004, GEP has raised over £1bn in total and boosted over 100 overseas entrepreneurs by getting them financial help from the UK along with advice from GEP’s dealmaker on how to develop internationally.
