A survey by BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, found that ‘business change’ together with ‘strategy and planning’ are considered the two main New Year ‘resolutions’ that need to be tackled to allow organisations’ IT functions to better enable the business this year.
When asked to select the top three most important business issues that should be tackled to most help their organisation’s IT function better enable the business in 2010, almost 60% said it was strategy and planning, while 45% opted for business change. Not far behind was the issue of nurturing the talent and skills of their IT workforce (37%), which just eclipsed resource management, at 36%.
Cliff Lineker, strategic business development director at the Institute, said: “Current predictions of a fragile recovery for 2010 don’t reveal the necessary strategic business changes and tough decisions that will be needed to make that happen across all sectors. Senior IT decision-makers are right to be concerned about making sure they have the skilled staff in the right roles to exploit the value of IT consistently and effectively to move the business forward.”
“Tools such as the government-backed and widely adopted IT skills training and development standard SFIAplus help organisations build and develop effective plans for future changes through the analysis of the core skills and capabilities needed by employees to complete a project,” Lineker said. “Even in a recession, people with sought-after skills and abilities will always find an appropriate market.”
The survey was completed by 119 respondents in December.
