Lucent Technologies Inc’s Bell Labs Design Automation unit is up for sale, according to a report in EE Times. The Murray Hill, New Jersey-based unit, which turned the 20 year core competency of Bell Labs’ internal electronic design automation tools into products for the external market, now sells products such as the ATTSIM simulation tools, FormalCheck high level functional verification, and Clover IC deep submicron VLSI layout verification tool. EE Times says the unit is being shopped to EDA companies and possible investors by Lucent as it looks again at the businesses that now make up Bell Labs. The two prime candidates among EDA companies to buy the unit are Cadence Design Systems Inc and Summit Design Inc.
