Google has launched Veo 2, an AI video generation model. Unveiled by Google DeepMind, the new AI video model claims to showcase major advancements in video quality and length, positioning the tech giant as a strong contender in the rapidly growing field of AI-powered content creation.
Veo 2, the successor to Google’s original Veo, can generate videos with up to 4K resolution at durations exceeding two minutes, which sets it apart from current competitors. In comparison, OpenAI’s Sora, which entered the video generation market earlier this year, produces videos capped at 1080p resolution and limited to just 20 seconds.
While Veo 2 is currently accessible through Google’s VideoFX tool, which is still in the experimental phase. At present, users can create clips of up to 720p resolution and eight seconds long in VideoFX, though Google plans to expand access and features in the coming months. The company has also confirmed plans to extend Veo 2’s capabilities to YouTube Shorts and other Google products in 2025.
Veo 2 also demonstrates an improved understanding of physical and human dynamics. The model can simulate motion, fluid dynamics, and lighting more accurately, enhancing realism in video outputs. Users can also specify cinematic effects, such as a low-angle tracking shot or a close-up using an 18mm lens, with the AI accurately replicating these techniques.
Veo 2 beats competitors
Veo 2’s improvements over previous video-generation models have been evaluated in head-to-head comparisons, where it outperformed other systems in terms of video quality. In tests with human raters, Google’s model was preferred by 59% of participants over Sora, which was rated by just 27%. Safety and responsible development have been central to the rollout of Veo 2. Google has included a built-in watermark, SynthID, in all AI-generated videos to help combat misinformation and ensure proper attribution of AI-generated content.
Veo 2’s arrival follows a competitive year in the AI landscape, with OpenAI also making headlines with its release of ChatGPT Search to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine market. Now, as Google responds with its own AI-powered search innovations, alongside these developments in video and image generation with Veo 2 and Imagen 3, the company has positioned itself strongly in the ongoing battle for leadership in the AI space.
