Building upon experience both firms have gained working with Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) and other state agencies across the US, the product offers DMVs the ability to take advantage of leading practices that can be scaled to meet their unique requirements and starting points.

The FileNet/BearingPoint solution enables DMVs to automate the entire document validation process. It assists DMVs in performing legally-mandated information gathering and authentication activities, including record storage and declaration as dictated by the Real ID Act and applicable state law provisions.

The product is also expected to substantially reduce the need to retain paper documents by validating and storing all documents electronically – providing DMVs with improved disaster recovery capabilities.

Signed into law in May 2005, the Real ID Act and its subsequent implementing regulations mandate certain uniform criteria for the content and issuance of state identification cards, including drivers’ licenses. The Real ID Act calls for states to normalize processes for collection and storage of cardholder data, as well as standardize license and identification document security standards by May 2008. Additionally, states must support inter-state information sharing and integration with federal systems.

Beyond assisting with regulatory compliance, the solution may also help state DMVs achieve improved operational efficiencies. With integrated information management features that offer rapid document retrieval, DMVs can reduce the time required to process ID card applications and respond to other customer inquiries, according to FileNet and BearingPoint.
