Elon Musk has stated that humans must merge with technology and AI in future or face extinction.

The billionaire CEO of Tesla and Space X has said that as artificial intelligence continues to evolve it is a matter of when, not if, that it outpaces humanity, and we should be prepared to merge with it.

Speaking at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Musk said: “Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence,”

“It’s mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself, particularly output.”

Elon Musk

Musk has voiced his concerns over the dangers of AI before and recently he, Stephen Hawking, and many other scientists produced a set of 23 principles to ensure that AI is developed in an ethical way.

One of these ideas was that AI should be developed so that their values should always be in alignment with humans and if the system causes harm it should be possible to ascertain why, as machine exists to serve mankind and never to rule over him.

The Tesla CEO went on to explain his thoughts by saying that an “artificial general intelligence” would be smarter than any human as machines are capable of transmitting data in the trillions of bits per second compared to the 10 that humans can type on a phone.

Musk has warned of the dangers of artificial intelligence numerous times in the past, but at least now it comes with the caveat that a grim Terminator/I Have No Mouth But I Must Scream-esque future could be avoidable, provided we choose to merge with the machines.

So there you have it, we, as rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh, fumbling in ignorance, and incapable of understanding must impose order on the chaos of organic evolution to ensure our own survival, or something like that.
