The same header photo will appear whenever someone views your profile on the web or Twitter’s mobile apps. Photo streams will also now appear below a user’s most recent tweets on mobile apps.

"You can upload your header photo, which appears above your Tweets, to express yourself instantly, anywhere," said Twitter in a statement.

Twitter users will still have their background photo available on twitter.com.

Twitter has also upgraded its mobile experience by revamping its iPad application to make it "fast, beautiful and easy to use."

"Tweets come alive in the new Twitter for iPad," said the company. "Expand Tweets with a single touch to see beautiful photos, rich videos and web page summaries right into your timeline. Dive into the content with another tap to see the photo, play the video or read links from the web in full screen mode."

The new changes will roll out gradually but users can add the banner image now by adjusting their design settings.

While Twitter has been making changes to give its users a more visual mobile experience, the company caused controversy by introducing stricter guidelines on tweets from third party apps.

Twitter’s change is designed to give the company more control over third party apps which has caused an outcry in the developer community.

The updated rules have stricter authentication requirements and new per endpoint rate-limiting. In the new version, authentication is a must for every request to the API.

Shortly after announcing stricter guidelines for third party apps, the microblogging site introduced its Certified Products Program which aims to connect businesses with developer products and services on Twitter.

The company hopes the programme platform will make Twitter a more attractive platform for businesses.

The new program will focus on pushing developer products that focus on engagement, analytics and data.
