EMC has unveiled an upgrade to its Retrospect backup and recovery for small and medium businesses (SMBs), which comes with new capabilities including integration with VMware Consolidated Backup that allows Retrospect to perform off-host backups of virtual machines.

Other new features include, protection for computers running Microsoft Windows 7, a new Retrospect Emergency Recovery CD for disaster recovery of Windows servers and PCs, wake-on-LAN technology for energy conservation, and support for 64-bit processors and operating systems.

The company said that Retrospect 7.7 can wake Windows and Mac computers that are in standby mode, allowing those systems to await backup in a low power usage state. The Retrospect Emergency Recovery CD will start up computers running Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2008, or Server 2003 and then allow them to be restored with Retrospect.

According to EMC, Retrospect Multi Server 7.7 protects an unlimited number of networked Windows, Mac, and Linux servers, desktops, and laptops and the Retrospect Small Business Server Premium and Standard 7.7 protects Windows Small Business Server and an unlimited number of networked Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops and laptops.

The Retrospect Disk-to-Disk 7.7 protects a single Windows server to hard disk or optical media and the Retrospect Professional 7.7 protects a single, non-server Windows PC and up to two additional networked Windows, Mac, or Linux desktops and laptops.

Peter Wharton, vice president of marketing of the consumer and small business products division at EMC, said: By integrating with VMware Consolidated Backup, EMC Retrospect is able to provide complete backups of virtualised systems without impacting the performance of those systems. This functionality allows SMBs implementing virtualisation to enjoy a similar level of protection seen in the enterprise.
