Understanding and utilising reams of data is becoming ever more critical to businesses but also to how several IoT applications can be used to improve quality of life.
With this in mind, Cambridge University’s new £5 million institute will focus on information science to help understand big data. It will use mathematical sciences to tackle challenges on understanding reams of data.
The institute is funded by hedge fund manager Cantab Capital Partners in a collaboration with the university.
The Cantab Capital Institute for Mathematics of Information will sit within the institution’s Faculty of Mathematics.
The institute said the ultimate goal is to help ensure all available information is always used in different scenarios, such as when doctors make clinical diagnoses, or planners build a smart city.
Dr Ewan Kirk, CIO of Cantab, said: "Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences and, in the 21st century, information and data play an increasingly vital role in a diverse range of fields."
