Being a football player can’t be that much of a hard life. But spare a thought for our overpaid idols when they open up Twitter to check their notifications: Brazil striker Neymar’s got 1.5 million of them since June 28.
TCS SocialSoccer, which uses analytics to find the most talked about players and teams on Twitter, has put this handy infographic together to identify the 10 most popular footballers during the last 16 round of the tournament.
Chile was the most talked about team with an amazing 22% of all tweets, ahead of Brazil (12%) and the USA (11%), while Neymar was the most talked about player ahead of his team mate, penalty saving hero Julio Cesar, and Colombia’s new star James Rodriguez, who came second and third respectively.
Excitement around the USA team’s dramatic game against Belgium pushed the USA into joint-top place with Brazil for the country tweeting the most, with 15% of all World Cup tweets coming from the US.
Meanwhile, he may not have played in the round, but Luis Suàrez was still the sixth most talked about player thanks to his infamous biting incident in Uruguay’s game against Italy.
