Amazon Web Services will back Community Energy to support the construction and operation of 80 MW solar farm in Virginia.
The Amazon Solar Farm US East is expected to produce 170,000MW hours per year of energy, which is equal to the electricity used by 15,000 US homes.
The ecommerce giant said that the company’s data centres would use the power generated by the plant.
Last year the company announced its plans to achieve 100% renewable energy usage for the global AWS infrastructure footprint.
In April, Amazon said that 25% of the power consumed by its infrastructures came from renewable energy sources, and it aims to increase the same to 40% by the end of 2016.
Amazon Web Services Infrastructure vice president Jerry Hunter said: "We continue to make significant progress towards our long-term commitment to power the global AWS infrastructure with 100 percent renewable energy.
"Amazon Solar Farm US East – the second PPA that will serve both existing and planned AWS datacenters in the central and eastern US – has the added benefit of working to increase the availability of renewable energy in the Commonwealth of Virginia."
Recently, the company received letters from its customers to be more transparent about its energy sources including the carbon footprint.
The announcement comes at a time when tech giants are investing in renewable energy, after being criticised of using excess amount of power and water to sustain their data centres.
Previously, it was reported that Apple is looking forward to invest €400m to fund at least six Irish renewable energy projects to purchase the electricity generated from the projects.
