Yahoo has unveiled Buzz, a social news site, in India. Buzz identifies the news stories and blog posts based on user votes and search patterns.
Few Indian publishers have already featured their content on Yahoo Buzz.
Online publishers are given the option of placing a Yahoo Buzz button on their websites to enable readers share and vote on stories.
Yahoo frequently trials its new technologies in India. Earlier, the company tested its new Glue search concept in India, before launching it in the US. Glue search aggregates text, images and video results on a single page.
Since the launch in the US last year, content from more than 20,000 publishers worldwide have been submitted to Yahoo Buzz.
The company said that it does not have immediate plans to introduce Buzz in Indian languages even though it runs some of its web sites in local languages.
Frazier Miller, head of audience at Yahoo India, said: “India is the first market outside the US to get Buzz. Over 60% of internet users in the country are younger than 25 years old, and there is a lot of interest among users in social media tools such as Buzz.”
