Verizon Wireless has completed the first phase of construction of a high-tech $50m switching facility in South Florida that will expand and reinforce wireless network capacity, and help enhance services for customers throughout the region.
According to the company, reinforced exterior walls and several interior trusses have been erected on the 45,000-square-foot mobile telephone switching office (MTSO).
The facility will serve as the company’s main call-processing hub for South Florida, serving an area from Key West to Broward County.
The new MTSO will also serve as the Verizon Wireless emergency operations center in South Florida, and be home to a fleet of cell on wheels (COWs), cell on light trucks (COLTs) and generators on trucks (GOATs) for use during and after events like hurricanes.
Pam Tope, president for Florida region at Verizon Wireless, said: We have a very mobile and tech-savvy population here, to go with the many sports championships, theme parks, and other attractions and events that bring millions of visitors from all over the world. This is a big job for our network, so we make even bigger investments to make sure we stay the best in the business.
