Several US government websites and Twitter accounts have been taken offline in the wake of a partial US government shutdown after the Congress failed to pass a budget bill.

Republican’s opposition to US President Barrack Obama’s healthcare policy (Obamacare), the Affordable Care Act, has led to the government shutdown.

The websites of Federal Trade Commission (FTC), NASA, the Library of Congress, the National Park Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Census Bureau, among several others have been suspended leaving a note "Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available."

Even the websites that remain operational may not function at regular capability, as the Department of Veterans Affairs states that its home page would be ‘updated intermittently’, while the Federal Elections Commission site would remain online but in static mode.

Reports reveal that thousands of federal employees were barred from accessing emails related to their work as part of the federal policy.

Employees, who had been sent home, were also banned to work via mobile devices or remote computer connections.

In addition to websites, smaller federal institutions including the Smithsonian National Zoo were hit with the shutdown.
