T-Mobile USA, the US operating arm of Deutsche Telekom, has reported total revenues of $5.28bn in the first quarter of 2010, down 2.2% compared to $5.4bn in the same period last year.

The company posted an operating income of $743m, an increase of 8.3% compared to $686m of the same period a year ago. Net income increased by 12.4% to $362m from $322m.

Revenue from contract services declined to $4.1bn from $4.2bn, while revenue from prepaid, and roaming and other services decreased to $378m and $142m from $393 and $156m, respectively. Revenues from equipment sales rose from $578m to $608m.

Total customers served declined by 77,000 in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 415,000 net customer additions in the first quarter of 2009. In addition, customers using 3G-capable converged devices continued to increase significantly during the quarter.

Rene Obermann, chief executive officer of Deutsche Telekom, said: “T-Mobile USA achieved a slightly higher margin and strong data ARPU, despite a challenging and highly competitive business environment.

In addition, the strong growth in customers with 3G smartphones, plus expanding the HSPA+ network and pipeline of innovative offerings, positions T-Mobile USA to capture the data opportunity in the US.”
