Cisco has announced that Sweden’s telecoms provider TeliaSonera is deploying a point to point fibre network based on its IP Next-Generation Network (IP NGN), allowing the telco to deliver symmetrical broadband services of up to 100Mbps to homes and businesses.

According to Cisco, its point to point fibre to the premises (FTTx) system enables Teliasonera to to offer advanced services for consumers and businesses over a single next-generation platform. Such services include multiroom IPTV and video on demand (VoD), high-definition video conferencing and low-latency connectivity for data centres. The new network is expected to deliver symmetrical bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps).

TeliaSonera has deployed Cisco ME 3400 Series and Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series carrier ethernet switches in its fibre network. The Cisco carrier ethernet portfolio also features capabilities to support video services (including video conferencing, IPTV, HDTV and video on demand) with minimal packet loss, delay and jitter. TeliaSonera already uses Cisco CRS-1 carrier routing systems at the core of its IP NGN.

Ove Alm, chief technology officer for TeliaSonera, said: Triple play and TV have been huge successes for us, and we chose a point-to-point fibre network that meets the rapidly increasing bandwidth demands of our customers. The Cisco solution not only gives us the ability to meet future demands, but also provides us with the scope to bring differentiated services to market quickly, supported by a scalable, cost-efficient, high-quality network.

Niels Furu, vice president, Nordics, Cisco Europe, said: TeliaSonera’s FTTx evolution will allow it to deliver a variety of sophisticated on-demand services, helping it increase revenues and reduce operation costs.
