Sun Microsystems has released a new version of Sun Java Communications Suite, designed to meet the messaging and collaboration requirements of telcos, service providers and enterprise customers.

According to Sun Microsystems, the Calendar Server 7 portion of the new suite supports the latest CalDAV standard, enabling interoperability with other calendaring clients such as Mac iCal and Mozilla Lightning, and offers native calendar synchronisation with mobile devices that support CalDAV, including the Apple iPhone.

The Indexing and Search Service 1 component of the release7 provides real-time indexing and search of messaging content, including attachments in a variety of data types such as PDF, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice.org, and image formats; and the Messaging Server 7 Update 3 delivers a messaging platform that supports Red Hat 5, the company said.

The company said that the Instant Messaging 8 update 2 offers instant messaging and presence platform that supports IM in mobile devices and interoperability with other IM networks, such as AOL, MSN and Yahoo.

The Sun Covergence 1 Update 3, which features a web client for the Java Communications Suite email, calendaring, contacts, IM and other web services, enables fast searches of email attachments using the new Indexing and Search Service and provides access to external POP email and supports all browsers including IE 8, Sun said.

Jim Parkinson, senior vice president at Sun Microsystems, said: With the addition of CalDAV and the latest version of our Convergence user interface, we’ve proven that you do not have to sacrifice scale, security and functionality for an outstanding mail, calendar and messaging experience through a web browser.
