Samsung Electronics has announced that it has been selected by Japanese mobile phone operator KDDI to provide next-generation communications equipment in Japan.

The financial terms of the deal has not been disclosed.

KDDI is expected to start its commercial service using long-term evolution (LTE or 4G) technology next year, Samsung said.

According to an AFP report, KDDI said Samsung would provide small base stations, especially in Japanese cities.

Earlier, KDDI had selected NEC and Motorola Mobility Holdings to build the large stations for its LTE network.

The South Korean company already provides LTE equipment to phone operators in the US and the Middle East. The company said that it is in talks with eight mobile operators across the world to provide commercial LTE services.

Samsung told AFP that it plans to offer its service "for hotspots in extremely dense user areas that require higher capacity mobile broadband, whilst simultaneously improving service quality in weak-signal areas."
