Qualcomm, a developer wireless technologies, products and services, said that it is opening a new R&D centre in Shanghai, as part of its efforts to utilise the growing pool of telecommunications engineering talent and enhance local R&D capabilities for the increasingly important wireless communications market in China.

The company said that the new R&D centre in Shanghai will focus on advancing chipset offerings to better address China’s increasing need for high quality and affordable 3G handsets with customised features and time-to-market advantages.

Steve Mollenkopf, president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, said: “We are very excited about the expansion of Qualcomm’s research and development activities in China, including the establishment of the new R&D center in Shanghai, which will enable our partners to bring a greater breadth and depth of 3G devices at a faster pace to one of the world’s most rapidly expanding mobile markets.

“Qualcomm’s expanded presence in China is an example of our commitment to focusing our resources on supporting our customers as well as promoting wireless innovation efforts in China.”
