UK-based ITIS Holdings, together with its local licencee Traffic Intelligence and cellular operator SingTel Optus, has launched a nationwide traffic information system in Australia.
According to ITIS, the new system uses the Cellular Floating Vehicle Data (CFDV) and will be branded as Optus Traffic View (OTV). It is expected to cover over 70,000km of roadway.
ITIS claims that Traffic Intelligence and Optus are using TrafficScience CFVD technology to generate traffic information from anonymously processing signalling information from the Optus 2G and 3G mobile networks. It expects that the Optus Traffic View will provide real-time, historic and predictive traffic information to the automotive, mobile and government markets.
The company claims that an independent quality report produced by the Australian Research Board (ARRB) has shown that the system is producing high quality traffic information.
David Quayle, managing director of traffic intelligence, said: As a result of the launch of the OTV service, Australian governments and road users now have access to high quality travel time and congestion information on every major highway and freeway. This data will be highly beneficial to all road users and uniquely, does not require any investment in infrastructure by a government department.
