Facebook has unveiled plans to build a second data centre at its Lulea site in Sweden.
The new Luleå 2 data centre will be constructed alongside a pre-existing facility, which was opened in 2013.
Facebook said construction work will start shortly on its second data centre building, which will utilise a new rapid deployment data centre (RDDC) design.
The company said RDDC involves the use of pre-made modular sections that are assembled on-site, reducing the duration and local impact of building work.
"Just as the great Swedish company Ikea revolutionised how furniture is designed and built, we hope that Luleaa 2 will become a model for the next generation of data centers," the company said.
The company noted that as well as refining the construction process, it intends to make it sfacilities as energy-efficient as possible once they start operations.
"Over the past year at Luleå 1, we have been able to achieve an average power usage effectiveness of approximately 1.05, meaning that almost every watt going into our data center is used to run the computing equipment," Facebook said.
The server technology implemented within the first facility formed part of Facebook’s two-year-old Open Compute Project, involving the creation on specifications for servers by the social networking firm and sharing them globally for anyone to use.
