Wearable technology is set to become the next big target for cybercriminals, according to security firm Kaspersky.
The company’s comments come shortly after details of Apple Watch were revealed, with the smartwatch expected to be released early next year.
Roberto Martinez, a security analyst at Kaspersky, said: "Unfortunately, the emergence of new technologies also entails new security risks. There are in fact many concerns about potential risks to privacy and ways in which these new devices could be compromised.
"Cybercriminals don’t rest and are always looking for new ways to obtain gains from their victims, whenever they see an opportunity they will work day and night to achieve this objective."
Testing Google Glass on a network that had been poisoned to capture traffic, the firm found that while most information was encrypted some was left in plain text, potentially allowing hackers to profile a victim.
Martinez also noted that since the device could not connect to a virtual private network (VPN) the possibility existed for traffic to be captured and analysed.
He said that new technologies’ reliance on existing protocols and software would mean they were also exposed to existing hacking tactics against operating systems and network layers.
"In coming months, we’ll see wearable devices becoming the next attack targets, highlighting the need to pay special attention to these devices, their capabilities, and the information they handle," he said.
