Wireless security cameras are increasingly common among home users, businesses and police departments. Not only does the lack of a wired transmission cable reduce the complexity of installation, it also allows cameras to be put in places unreachable to wired models.

People can have a range of motivations for buying a camera, including monitoring a loved one or making a household more secure. Whatever yours are, below are five of the best examples on the market.

1) UCam247

UCam247

Price: £150

Despite the relatively low cost of this camera the image quality is crisp, even at night. Handy apps on both Android and iOS make managing the device easy, as well as streamlining the installation process.

Footage can be recorded to a MicroSD card if desired, with the numerous video settings available allowing you to reduce memory consumption. Like many of its rivals the camera also lets you designate motion detection regions, helping you eliminate hours of uneventful film.

2) Axis P3301

Axis P3301

Price: £40

With the appearance of a bulbous fire alarm, Axis’ camera looks less sleek than its competitors. Sadly this is somewhat matched by the top resolution of 640×480, and the fiddly process of manually adjusting the view.

The upside is an easy installation process, excellent night vision, and a high degree of adjustability. Quality codecs also ensures that the camera does not hog a user’s bandwidth, which will surely be appreciated by those with a less than stellar internet connection.

3) Lorex LW2110

Lorex LW2110

Price: £120

The durability of this camera makes it suited to being placed outside. Installation is easy, with the adjustable antenna allowing for increased signal range of up to 450ft, one of the greater ranges on this list.

Privacy is ensured on the camera thanks to the inclusion of Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology, which also reduces the interference to give a clearer signal, and like its rivals the camera can see in the dark.

4) Y-Cam Bullet HD

Y-Cam Bullet HD

Price: £250

The Y-Cam Bullet is fully waterproofed and comes with a wall mount, making it ideal for use outdoors. Infrared LEDs also allow it to see at night, admittedly like many of the other cameras on this list, but at 1080p the image quality is unlikely to be bested.

Motion detection zones can also be set up through the device, and a user can also ask to be sent alerts via email, FTP or HTTP if something is detected. The option to record directly to a MicroSD card is also available.

5) Panasonic WV-SP105

Panasonic WV-SP105

Price: £200

Though this Panasonic camera requires a bit more tech knowledge in order to set up, those who persevere will likely find it worthwhile, with the middling price belying both the build and image quality of the device.

That said, the night vision is not as sharp as that of its rivals, and the camera is not suited to being used outdoors. It also lacks a mounting bracket, which is required for installation on the ceiling or wall.
