About 42% of the SMBs in the US have identified IT security as one of the main concern, while another 42% identified managing and using collected data as another concern, a report finds.
As survey carried out by CompTIA on 500 SMBs, finds that 39% of the companies believe that their technology infrastructure needs modernisation.
CompTIA senior director of technology analysis Seth Robinson said, "Small businesses are not immune to attacks simply because their data sets are smaller.
"Cyberattacks stem from a variety of motivations. Attacks of the smallest firms, where defenses are often weak, occur just as often as attacks on larger companies."
"As businesses undergo digital transformation data turns into a more critical asset," Robinson noted.
"Though many SMBs have never managed data as primary resource, there is growing interest in using data for analysis and decision-making."
Though many SMBs seek value for money from their smaller investment, the landscape is changing with the availability of cloud based technology which is making them affordable for smaller companies.
The study also finds that bigger companies are going for expansion after several years of cost cutting measures, while smaller companies are still under financial stress.
58% of the SMBs believe that cost cutting as strategic priority, 55% believe that reaching new customers as a priority while 48% want to focus on operational efficiency.
The survey polled online opinion of executives and professionals from 500 SMBs in the US during December 2014.
