The Russian government has started blocking some Internet content, under its new Internet blacklist law which it is said to protect children from unsafe content.
The New YorK Times reported that the country’s regulators have asked Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to remove material that the officials determined was objectionable, with only Google’s YouTube is resisting.
Social networking giant Facebook has already removed a group called Club Suicid, while Twtitter took down posts related to illegal drug agreements and three videos which promote suicidal thoughts.
Facebook was quoted by the New YorK Times as saying that "We reviewed the content and it was removed because it violated our terms of use."
The new law, which was passed last year, allows authorities to blacklist and force websites to turn offline without a trial and demand internet service providers (ISP) and web firms block content it believes offensive.
The legislation, which is expected to enhance censorship in the country, will bar web-sites featuring child-unfriendly content, supporting use of drugs, suicides and issue child pornography.
