Computer security company Norton has released Norton Mobile Security Lite, a free security application for Android-based smartphones.

Norton said that over six billion applications have been downloaded to date in the Android Market..

Norton vice-president mobile products Dave Cole said having Norton installed means feeling equally confident regardless of what you do on your mobile phone.

"Norton Mobile Security Lite protects confidential information and offers basic mobile protection from the most trusted name in security – which means your device is safeguarded and you’re worry-free."

Norton Mobile Security Lite seamlessly combines select anti-theft features with powerful anti-malware, said Norton.

Norton Mobile Security Lite key features include: anti-theft feature which allows users to remotely lock their lost or stolen device via SMS text; anti-malware scans for downloaded; and automatic LiveUpdate.

The new offering is initially available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.
