Tableau opened its first data centre in Europe, with a colo space in Dublin, Ireland.

Tableau customers can choose to migrate their data to the Dublin-based data centre, while new customers can select their preferred location, either North America or Europe its said.

James Eiloart, VP of Tableau’s European Operations, "We recently opened an office in Dublin and are thrilled to now open our very first European data centre there. In addition to Dublin, we will also provide a disaster recovery location in Munich, Germany.

"We have technical team members in Dublin already, so it made a lot of sense to put the primary pod there."

The company did not disclose any infrastructure or further details about the hub, telling CBR that "the new Dublin data centre is a collocated, utilising an existing facility".

Ireland has witnessed a data centre boom over the last 12 months. Currently, the country is home to 19 data centres, 15 of them located in Dublin including Digital Realty, TelecityGroup (soon to transferred to Equinix’s collocation portfolio), and Interxion.

Tableau said the data centre is ISO27001 certified and provides a disaster recovery location in Munich, Germany.

Looking at the benefits of having entered the European data centre space, Eiloart said: "For businesses in the EU and around the world, the new data centre means more flexibility and power of choice about where they want to store their data. We wanted to respond to this demand by offering greater choice to our customers, particularly for our customers outside of the U.S. who wish to store their data closer to home."

The company said the launch of a European-based data centre is in response to its continued international growth and customer demand, and had no relation to the Safe Harbour ruling by the EU court last year.

Eiloart said: "The work to implement the Dublin facility was begun in March of 2015 to respond to the needs of our customers, well before the Safe Harbour ruling.

"We will continue to invest more into both our capabilities and infrastructure to put analytics into the hands of anyone with data questions."

Asked if Tableau is eyeing other data centres, he said the company is "completely focused on today’s announcement".
