Windows 10 took centre stage in Satya Nadella’s keynote at the Microsoft Future Decoded event in London, as the Microsoft CEO articulated a vision of a "mobile-first, cloud-first world".

The new Windows 10 operating system, which provides a unified platform across all Windows devices, will provide "mobility of the human experience across all of the computing in our lives," Nadella said.

"Five years from now, we will look at computers on our wrists, on our eyes, small screens and large screens, so there will be ubiquitous computing. What is more important is our mobility: the experience mobility that gets orchestrated by the cloud."

Nadella then explained three ambitions his company has for competing in this world.

"The first is reinvention of productivity and business process. In all the departments of computing that we have, what is scarce still is human attention and time.

"The idea [is] that we can create a system both individually and at the team level and at the entire organisational level to help allocate that scarce resource wisely so that we can get more out of every moment of our lives.

"A second ambition of ours is building the intelligent cloud infrastructure that will fuel the next generation of applications for everyone from every start-up to large business and to do that with a true distribution back-link.

"The third ambition is about creating more personal computing. It is about being able to imagine a world where from the Raspberry Pi to Hololens, you have the mobility of the experience and the unified platform for developers, the unified security and management control plane for IT.

"That’s what Windows 10 is."

Nadella then showed off the numerous features of Microsoft’s roster of devices. Demonstrating the HoloLens, he claimed that augmented reality and other emerging technologies were about to "go mainstream."

Nadella also used the speech to announce that the company would be building new data centres in the UK and had completed the acquisition of data centres in the Netherlands and Ireland.

His speech was followed by talks from lastminute.com founder Martha Lane Fox and Microsoft partners such as Arsenal F.C. and the Ministry of Defence.
