Drivers looking to buy a smart car will have their options range widened by 2017.
PSA Peugeot Citroën will partner with Sierra Wireless to design smart car apps going beyond emergency calling.
Its platform will use Sierra Wireless’s smart automotive modules, Legato and the AirVantage cloud.
The Legato platform will use third-party applications hosted on the wireless module by providing an application framework and development environment.
The applications will then be downloadable from the cloud via AirVantage.
Brigitte Courtehoux, Director of the Connected Cars and Services Business Unit for PSA Peugeot Citroën, said: "Sierra Wireless technology provides us with a full automotive-grade solution, including the wireless connectivity, the application support and the remote management capabilities we need to offer these services efficiently and cost-effectively."
Dan Schieler, SVP of OEM Solutions for Sierra Wireless said: "Customers like PSA have been the driving force behind our continued development of full device-to-cloud solutions that empower our OEM partners to be technology and innovation leaders in their respective markets."
PSA added that its emergency in car built system has sent over 13,000 alerts to emergency services operating in 17 European countries.
