A new IBM large-capacity portable storage device has been introduced with the goal of slashing the time and cost usually associated with mass cloud migration, with enhanced security.

The device offers a vast 120 TB usable capacity, and it is equipped with sturdy AES 256-bit encryption, intended to provide confidence during the major transition.

With this device, IBM said in a blog post on the introduction, customers will be able to migrate the 120 TB usable capacity in as little as seven days, a massive reduction from the weeks and months commonly required to complete the cloud migration process.

The IBM blog post on the introduction said: “IBM Cloud Mass Data Migration is an efficient option for any organization looking to transfer tens to hundreds of terabytes of data or more to the cloud. It can help companies free up on-premises storage, implement a backup and recovery plan, create an active archive or media repository, or take advantage of a range of services including database and analytics solutions offered in the IBM Cloud to extract deeper value from their data.”

Another beneficial feature of the device is that it can be utilised by organisations with limited access to strong internet speeds. The IBM blog post includes examples of companies involved in farming and shipping. This is important as it prevents these industries from being relegated to the past.

“With a usable data capacity of 120 TB, Mass Data Migration has 20 percent more storage capacity than similar solutions in the market so that companies can quickly and affordably move even more data to the cloud. For extremely large data transfer needs, multiple devices can be used all at once, or over time,” said the IBM blog post.

The device is currently only available in the United States, but plans are in place to making the device available in the EU soon. In terms of cost, the device is set at a flat rate price of $395 per device.
