Google is strengthening its cloud offering by stepping further into the Big Data space.
The company’s offering, Google Cloud Dataproc, is a service that offers managed hosting to both Spark and Hadoop.
The service will enable customers to use open source data tools for functions such as bath processing, querying, streaming, and machine learning. It also offers automation tools that speeds the creation of clusters, in addition to turning them off when they’re not needed.
Competing on price isn’t new for the company, so offering the service at a starting price of 1 cent per virtual CPU in each cluster per hour, isn’t too surprising.
One of the advantages of Cloud Dataproc is that clusters can be established, started, stopped, or shut down within 90 seconds. This is compared to 5 to 30 minutes in an IaaS environment.
The service can be managed through the company’s developer console, which means that users won’t need to learn new APIs or new tools to implement Spark and Hadoop clusters.
