New York-based Xandros has been talking about a move into the Linux server distribution business since July 2004 and has been beta testing Xandros Server since April 2005. The product is being demonstrated at LinuxWorld in Boston.

In order to differentiate itself from established server competitors such as Red Hat Inc and Novell Inc, Xandros has lined up the deal with RealNetworks to include its Helix Server and RealProducer software, enabling the operating system to act as a streaming audio and video server.

Xandros Server is a premium product, and we were determined to offer our customers Helix streaming media products and RealAudio and RealVideo, said Andreas Typaldos, Xandros CEO.

The forthcoming server product will also introduce what the company is calling a Managed Community approach to server management that automates management and administration tasks, as well as the xMC Xandros Management Console, designed to make it easier to deploy and manage Linux servers within heterogeneous environments.
