Wyse said the Winterm S30 is an enhanced version of its Windows CE-based device in a smaller form factor, and running CE 5.0. It said it is the size of a paperback but runs three times faster than the company’s former CE-based device.

Meanwhile, the company said the 5150SE is based on the latest Linux Kernel 2.6 with the Wyse Linux V6 operating system. Wyse said it is a more customizable device, and an ideal replacement for AS/400 terminals as well as for mixed environments that include both Linux and Windows. It displays Windows applications running on Citrix MetaFrame and Microsoft Terminal Services installations, text terminal emulations and an integrated Java-capable Firefox browser for direct access to HTML applications.

Analyst firm IDC has said it expects the thin client market to grow by 20% annually for the next several years as organizations seek to reduce IT complexity and cost and improve information security.

Thin client computing is a model in which applications and data are hosted centrally on a server rather than on the desktop device. The argument for thin client computing is that it reduces cost of ownership by enabling more centralized management of data and applications; improves data security for the same reasons; reduces the need for such regular client upgrades because processing power is handled centrally; reduces the amount of space required by a client because thin clients are just that; and reduces noise and heat emissions because thin clients require less cooling than traditional PCs and often have no moving parts.
